Note

Robert McCulloch, who thus became liferenter of Drummorrell, first appeared on record on 8 October 1562 as a witness to a sasine in Kirkcudbright. In addition to other property there, he owned a tenement on the west side of the High Street leading from the Market Cross to the Mote of Kirkcudbright. He was a member of the Town Council from 1576 to 1591. From the Burgh he held a tack of the customs of Monygoff for which he paid 10 merks yearly. He was also tacksman of the ferryboat across to Kirkchrist, for many years. The peculiarity of this service was that the tacksmen had to maintain the ferry, if necessary providing a new boat: and that the maills had to be paid, not to the Burgh, but to the minister, as part of his stipend.

Robert McCulloch may not have been the first of the family to reside in Kirkcudbright. His sister, Bessie McCulloch, married John McClellane of Balma, to whose son, Thomas McClellane, Robert McCulloch and his Sons were curators in 1582.
