Note | “Our cousin Barholm is almost a bridegroom: the lady, Miss Stewart of Phisgill, I daresay twenty years (at least) younger than he. Not a beauty, but agreeable both in looks and manners, highly accomplished and (no doubt) possessed of a very handsome fortune: you know Phisgill is one of the richest private gentlemen in Scotland, with no very numerous family. I daresay Barholm is surprised at his own good fortune .......... His brother, Samuel, that accomplished young gentleman, is to be blessed with the hand of Miss Hawthorn, the principle heiress in Wigton and, I’m told, a fine girl - so I really think the McCullochs are making a very respectable figure in the annals of matrimony.” |
