Note | Ebenezer McCulloch appears to have been a brilliant man, energetic and impulsive: it was due to him and Tod that the original capital of the British Linen Company was raised from £50,000 to £70,000: and to Ebenezer alone that the introduction in 1752 of the promissory notes was due. He appears to have leased the ‘ruinous house of the forfeited Earl of Winton in Canongate and in it was held the first meeting of the British Linen Company in 1746. |
