Andrew Jameson, advocate, later to become a judge of the Court of Session with the title of Lord Ardwall. He was the son of Andrew Jameson, Sheriff of Edinburgh, author of a history of his family.

Residence
Although born in the Westlands, he migrated to Edinburgh at the age of one, and may justly rank as a son of that ancient city.

His first school was Mr Oliphant's in Charlotte Square. We hear of him at the age of eight visiting with his father he Gray cousins at Bowerswell, and amazing them by his memory. He could repeat whole chapters of the Bible, and poetry.

Presently he proceeded to the Edinburgh Academy, the famous school of which he became later a director. The Academy provided a generous, if scarcely superfine, scholarship and an admirable training in conduct.

From the Academy he passed to St Andrews, where his father had studied before him. Of his college days little is recorded. He took the ordinary Arts course, and graduated M.A. in 1865, the year in which his father became Sheriff of Aberdeen.

His legal ancestry stood him in good stead, for the law offices of Scotland were sown with his kin. Nor had he that appearance of callow youth which deters the client. His hair, after the fashion of his family, was grey at twenty, and silver at twenty-five
