Van McColloch was the fifth of nine known children of Solomon McColloch (McCullough?) (c1777-1843 (or 1846?)) and Jemima Petty McColloch (McCullough?) (1785-1832). Solomon was born in Virginia, moved to Logan County, Ohio in c1803 and then to White County, Indiana in c1832, where he is thought to have died at Monticello, White County, Indiana. It is not known where Solomon or Jemima are buried; but it is assumed at White County, Indiana.
Van married Elizabeth Rothrock (1818-1896) on 07 Mar 1838 at White County, Indiana. Van and Elizabeth were the parents of eleven known children, namely:

3. Mary Catherine McColloch Beers (1842-1928)
4. Nancy Eliza McColloch Lane (1844-1932)
5. Ashley McColloch (1848-1848)

7. Martha Elizabeth McColloch Bunnell (1851-1925)
8. John William McColloch (1854-1930)
9. Margaret Alice McColloch (1857-1857)
10. Clara Grizzillah "Zillah" McColloch Dean (1858-1955)
11. Frank Berton McColloch (1861-1939)
The family moved from White County, Indiana to Emporia, Lyon County, Kansas in c1867.
